A Quick History of The Araucana Breed
The Araucana has a very long history dating back to the 1600's and before
First kept by the Araucana Indians in south America it is idly believed that the Spaniards took some of these Chickens onto their ships and took them over to the Mediterranean it was from here that they spread into Europe.
There is a breed in the Shetland Islands that is believed to be a descendant of the Araucana's brought over by the Spaniards these birds do look like Araucanas and certainly lay blue eggs. I am in the process of obtaining some of these birds but its very hard to track down true strains as many have been left to roam in flocks with other birds thus cross breeds are very common
There are so many fantastic stories of how the breed came to be and I am in the process of looking into the history of the breed and how it came to be in the UK, but one thing is certain and that is that it originated on the south west American coast and was kept by the local tribes (Araucana Indians)

Blue egg layers such as Cotswold Legbars have the Araucana Gene in them, The Cotswold was created by crossing Gold Legbar with White Leghorn and Araucana which gives us the blue eggs.
The blue colouring of the egg should run all the way through the shell and wont rub off, it is created by a substance inside the chickens called Oocyanin.
